Edible Garden
To add to our Botany and Practical Life curricula, Claire’s Montessori incorporates weekly lessons in our Edible Garden.
Situated behind our schoolyard close to an ancient oak tree, the students enjoy growing their own vegetables and learning how to care for and harvest from their plants. Each class has 2 raised beds for which they are responsible and from which they can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
In addition to the curricula benefits, research shows that school gardens promote and encourage children to eat more healthily and when students are involved in the raising of fruits and vegetables it encourages them to try new healthy food options.
School gardens also connect children to the environment, help prevent childhood obesity, promote physical activity and encourages new ways of learning.
