Primary Program
Inspiring the magic in confidence, compassion, and creativity.
The Primary Program is for students between 3 and 6 years of age. During this exciting time of development, we introduce a robust curriculum that is grounded in authentic Montessori methodology. The goal is to prepare children academically, socially, and emotionally, while promoting peace-driven, independent thinking.
We have several Primary Program classrooms. Each classroom includes physical spaces for 5 core Montessori “subjects”:
- Practical Life: We aim to prepare a child with the skills to go about their everyday lives. This includes physical actions like being able to dress themselves, clean up, and prepare food, as well as social skills like grace, courtesy, and respect. All of these will help develop a child’s self-reliance and confidence.
- Sensorial: The student learns to focus on each of their five senses. They begin to perceive size, color, texture, and shape. These early sensory skills will lead to understanding of more advanced concepts like measurement and geometry. A student’s sense of touch also helps develop the finger strength and correct grip needed to write.
- Language: Progressing from early speech, the Primary Program language curriculum includes letter recognition and formation, word and sound recognition, and eventually the ability to read and write. However, an early writing curriculum is incorporated as early as the Toddler Program. Early language skills later lead to more advanced communication skills throughout life.
- Mathematics: Concepts are introduced through concrete, physically interactive Montessori materials. Because of this unique teaching style, our very young students are able to develop a strong understanding of math concepts early on. The curriculum is comprehensive and vast, beginning with basic counting and number recognition before moving on to more abstract operations.
- Cultural Studies: Students are introduced to a wide range of topics through unique hands-on experiences. Art and music are fairly common, but subjects such as Geography, History, Zoology, Botany, and other Physical Sciences are not traditionally taught to this age group in many schools. Our interactive approach and spiral curriculum foster student curiosity and academic success.
In addition to these 5 core Montessori areas, we integrate a Wellbeing curriculum. We invite students to learn how to identify feelings, regulate emotions, cultivate empathy for themselves and others, and much more. While noticing and caring for their physical and emotional wellbeing, the children develop resilience – a skill that they can rely on throughout their lifetimes.
